An uninformed or hasty viewer will see nothing else. But those who give it enough time will notice that the sculptures move in slowmotion across the space, following an erratic or even rectilinear pattern. When they encounter an obstacle, they stop and change direction.\r\n\r\nBreer made his first *Floats* in the 1960's, and gave them new life in the 1990's. It is one of his most discrete and yet most important statements as an artist: the artwork moves over the same ground as the public. Or conversely: the visitor shares the pedestal with the artwork. As a viewer, you become their travel companion, you follow the direction of their journey and so become implicated in the project's execution.\r\nRobert Breer was not only a sculptor; he gained fame as an experimental filmmaker as well.  In fact he is best known for his film work, where he combines figurative paintings with drawings. In contrast to his almost imperceptively slow moving sculptures, his films are quite speedy, even explosive. He is also the author of several flipbooks. Een ongeïnformeerde en haastige kijker zal niets anders zien. Degenen die zichzelf voldoende tijd geven om te zien, zullen echter merken dat de beelden heel langzaam, in rechte lijnen, dwars door de ruimte bewegen. À première vue, ses sculptures minimalistes ne semblent rien de plus que des objets posés par terre, de forme et de taille assez hétérogène. Le spectateur pressé ou non informé n’y verra rien de plus. Celui qui s’octroie assez de temps remarquera cependant que les sculptures se meuvent de manière quasi imperceptible à travers l’espace selon un schéma irrégulier, ou parfois rectiligne. Quand elles rencontrent un obstacle, elles s’arrêtent et changent de direction.\r\nBreer a réalisé sa première « sculpture flottante » dans les années 60, et a réinsufflé vie aux Floats dans les années 90. Il s’agit de l’une de ses professions de foi d’artiste à la fois les plus discrètes et les plus importantes : l’œuvre se meut sur le même sol que le public. Ou le contraire : le spectateur partage le socle de l’œuvre d’art. En tant que spectateur, on devient leur compagnon de route, on suit la direction de leur parcours, faisant ainsi fonction de co-exécutant du trajet.\r\nRobert Breer n’était pas uniquement sculpteur, mais peintre et cinéaste expérimental aussi. Il est surtout connu pour ses films d’animation, dans lesquels il combine la peinture abstraite et figurative avec des dessins. Contrairement à ses sculptures aux mouvements d’une lenteur quasi imperceptible, ses films sont très rapides, voire explosifs. Il est aussi l’auteur de plusieurs folioscopes.
