The oeuvres of both artists are strongly related to their reflections on society and are based on a sustainable and respectful approach to the natural world: art and life are one in their practices. Mu.ZEE has invited them to stage a joint exhibition at two locations: the Permekemuseum in rural Jabbeke and Mu.ZEE in the city of Ostend. The Permekemuseum is housed in the former home of Constant Permeke, a painter with a profound admiration for farming and fishing who decided to build his own house amid this green landscape. These surroundings have now been swallowed by villas and crisscrossed by busy roads, with petrol stations and shops. The contrasts between nature and urbanity and between past and present are inextricably linked to this location and form an ideal context for Orla Barry\u0026rsquo;s and Els Dietvorst\u0026rsquo;s exhibition due to the intrinsic connections with their work.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003eFrom 2011 until 2018, Orla Barry and Els Dietvorst ran a sheep farm in Ireland. The organisational and physical responsibilities that this entailed influenced them both as human beings and as artists. \u0026lsquo;Learning by doing\u0026rsquo; has always been a core part of their artistic practice. By working together and analysing the environment, but chiefly by engaging in the physicality of the work themselves, they accumulate knowledge that they subsequently process and share in their oeuvres. Today Orla Barry continues to manage the pedigree Lleyn flock on her father\u0026rsquo;s farm. In her individual practice, Els Dietvorst completes the circle with this exhibition and ends in Mu.ZEE with an artistic response to all the experiences she has gained during these seven years.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003eThe exhibition\u0026nbsp;Wintrum Frod\u0026nbsp;is the first project in which Orla Barry and Els Dietvorst unite the works that grew out of their work on the farm. The title is Anglo-Saxon for \u0026lsquo;wise in winters\u0026rsquo; and refers to the knowledge gained through extremely cold seasons. All the works in the exhibition are closely connected to their surroundings in Ireland. At the same time, the project can be seen in a wider context as a reflection on hyper-consumerism within our society. The sheep farm operates in the market economy, after all, and follows the logic that goes hand in hand with this game. The evolution in food production is just one consequence of capitalist thinking that influences a more general vision of society. Because we want cheap food, companies drive through economies of scale in order to work more efficiently, and the individual is excluded from the process. Knowledge passed down and accumulated by producers through their years of personal involvement is being downplayed and set aside. The relationship between consumers and food is also fading and leading to a growing gulf between human beings and the natural world. De organisatorische en fysieke verantwoordelijkheden die hiermee gepaard gaan, be\u0026iuml;nvloedden het duo als persoon en als kunstenaar. Leren door te leven en te falen, is dan ook steeds een kernaspect geweest binnen hun kunstenaarspraktijk. Door samen te werken en de omgeving te analyseren, maar voornamelijk door zelf in het werkveld te staan, vergaren zij kennis die ze vervolgens in hun oeuvre verwerken en verbreden. Vandaag zet Orla Barry de zorg voor de kudde Lleynschapen op haar vaders boerderij verder. Els Dietvorst maakt in haar individuele praktijk de cirkel rond met deze tentoonstelling en eindigt in Mu.ZEE met een artistieke respons op alle ervaringen die ze tijdens deze zeven jaar heeft opgedaan.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003eDe tentoonstelling \u0026lsquo;Wintrum Frod\u0026rsquo; is het eerste project waarin Orla Barry en Els Dietvorst de werken die tot stand kwamen door hun werk op de schapenboerderij samenbrengen. De titel is Angelsaksisch voor \u0026lsquo;wijs in de winter\u0026rsquo; en verwijst naar de kennis die extreem koude seizoenen voortbrengen. Alle werken in de tentoonstelling zijn nauw verwant aan de omgeving in Ierland. Tegelijkertijd kan het project ruimer worden gezien als een reflectie op de hedendaagse hyperconsumptiemaatschappij. De schapenboerderij is immers een speler in de markteconomie en volgt de logica die met dit spel gepaard gaat. De evolutie in de voedselproductie is \u0026eacute;\u0026eacute;n gevolg van een kapitalistisch denken dat dan weer een invloed heeft op een algemener maatschappijbeeld. Doordat we goedkope voeding wensen, voeren bedrijven schaalvergrotingen door om effici\u0026euml;nter werk te leveren en wordt het individu geweerd uit het proces. De kennis die producenten hebben opgebouwd en overgeleverd door hun jarenlange persoonlijke betrokkenheid, wordt gebagatelliseerd en terzijde geschoven. Ook de relatie tussen de consument en het voedsel vervaagt en zorgt voor een groeiende kloof tussen mens en natuur.
