Allan McCollum wants to engage the viewer with the concepts of uniqueness and mass production. 100 Plaster Surrogates was inspired by television images that use a rapid succession of paintings as a background, with a fade-out technique that makes the paintings appear to blend into one another. McCollum asks himself which images count as original ‘surrogates’.
