That\u0026rsquo;s not the end of that poem, which is that he says, \u0026ldquo;I had safe sex last night\u0026rdquo; and someone asks him how, and he says, \u0026rdquo; I just spat it out\u0026rdquo;. There\u0026rsquo;s a sense of those big HIV/AIDS ads creeping in. You already sense that it\u0026rsquo;s around, it\u0026rsquo;s there, and there\u0026rsquo;s this sense of unfortunately David beginning to become the most eloquent person to respond to this period. It\u0026rsquo;s as though he\u0026rsquo;s trundling along, and then suddenly he sails into this area, and it gets stormier and stormier. \u0026ldquo;The thing that thrilled them is the thing that killed them\u0026rdquo; is one of the lines. He probably didn\u0026rsquo;t wish to be, but as we know poetry becomes a form of testament. It can document periods in such an incredibly precise way, and in a way that\u0026rsquo;s what he found himself doing.
