Joseph Beuys

1975

Object, 48.5 x 68 cm.
Materials: copper plate, 4 black and white photographs

Collection: Isi Fizman.

This work used by Beuys for his performance as part of the Salto Arte circus event in Brussels in 1975, which coincided with the Je - Nous = Ik – Wij exhibition at the Museum of Ixelles curated by Harald Szeemann. The work is directly related to the larger installation Fond IV/4 exhibited in Je - Nous = Ik – Wij. The circus event was organised to raise funds for Isi Fiszman and Jean-Claude Garot's leftist magazine Pour. Between 1954 and 1984, Beuys made a series of works with the title Fond (meaning 'base', but also 'background') which all thematise the storage and emission of energy.

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
