The paintings are structured according to the principle of deduction: the sizes of elements inside the painting are extracted from the sizes and proportions of the painting as a whole; the width of the stripes is based on the width of the frame where the canvas is stretched. The romanticism associated with action painting is even further suppressed through the way Stella makes his paintings: he uses household paint, and marks out areas with tape in order to obtain straight lines. \r\n\r\nThe titles he gives to his works also have an associative function. In this way, the ‘black’ from the title is not only a colour, but also a carrier of meaning.\r\n"},{"locale":"nl","short_description":"","description":"De 'Black Paintings' zoals 'Tuxedo Junction' bestaan uit ongeprepareerde doeken met symmetrische patronen van zwarte banen. Het vrije, spontane gebaar van de action painters heeft Stella ingeruild voor een koele, beredeneerde handelwijze. De schilderijen zijn gestructureerd volgens het principe van deductie: de maten van de elementen binnen het schilderij zijn afgeleid van de maten en verhoudingen van het schilderij als geheel. De breedte van de strepen is gebaseerd op de breedte van de spielatten waartegen het doek is opgespannen.\r\nDe romantiek, die kleefde aan de action painting, wordt verder ondermijnd door de wijze waarop Stella het schilderij maakt. Hij gaat huishoudverf gebruiken, en plakt met tape delen af om rechte lijnen te verkrijgen.\r\nDe titels die hij aan deze werken geeft (zoals ook \"Arbeid maakt vrij\") lijken de functie te hebben de buitenwereld via culturele associaties in het werk te betrekken. Zwart is in deze opvatting niet alleen een kleur, maar ook drager van betekenissen, en refereert aan ras, goed/slecht, of aan het existentialisme."},{"locale":"fr","short_description":"","description":""},{"locale":"ru","short_description":"","description":""},{"locale":"de","short_description":"","description":""},{"locale":"es","short_description":"","description":""},{"locale":"el","short_description":"","description":""}],"actors":[{"id":530,"name":"Frank Stella","category":{"en":"Creator","nl":"Vervaardiger","fr":"Créateur"}}]}
