'I did the GOD Public Poem in Brussels in 1968; it was a clearer fusion of page and street, of letters and human form. The meaning was simple enough: with the g in my right hand and the d in my left, and the "Poet" as cipher or null, I bracketed one "class" of site after the other throughout the City to portray the disappearance of GOD and the City as God in his place: the RR station which breathed the citizens at 8 am, the Cathedral, the Museum of Fine Arts, a Funeral Parlor, the Stock Exchange, a Work Site, "Nature" (The Park), the great Galeries de la Reine as "Commerce" etc. The "poem" was still static and solitary, but the sense of a "reading" of the street more manifest. These were my first steps in an attempt to create a literacy of the street.' - Alain Arias-Misson on The G D Public Poem

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
