A piece of wood attached to the wall is the main character of a story told in a text hanging next to it. This anecdote starts at the Slovenian-Croatian border where a tree is planted. Throughout the text many other stories get intertwined in a chain of events and coincidences, all involving this piece of wood, eventually found by the narrator (Durham) in the waters of the Lido Beach in Venice.
