M HKA reserves its fifth floor for surprising interventions and intimate pop-up presentations. INBOX is a place that inspires and surprises, one that offers us a glimpse into the world of passionate thinkers and doers. With INBOX, M HKA literally creates a physical space in which the museum addresses often-recurring questions.

In the periods between the various events, we present a selection of our collection works, with particular attention to video art.

On Thursday 27.10.2016 the INBOX presentation by video artist Sarah Vanagt will open. In the installation Showfish Vanagt explores her interest in optics, microscopy and the history of the moving image. Vanagt aims to evoke the earliest microscopic images using fish eggs, the whiskers of a cat and a piece of coper paper.

This INBOX-presentation is part of  A Million Pictures, a European research project looking into the magical lantern as cultural heritage. Visual Poetics, the research group connected to the University of Antwerp invited Vanagt to create new artistic work using the lanterns of the Vrielynck collection as a starting point.

The Vrielynck collection, which has been in the care of M HKA since 2003, consists of antique cameras, projectors, optical toys. Between 2011 and 2013 the collection served as a source for research for a number of exhibitions curated by Edwin Carels. Sarah Vanagt is the fourth artist invited to draw inspiration from the Vrielynck collection.

The preview of Showfish coincides with the internationale workshop on magic lanterns, from 27 till 29 October at M HKA.

The Visual Poetics research centre and University Antwerp collaborate with M HKA to organise an international workshop between 27 and 29 October 2016: The Magic Lantern Today: Creative Re-use of Cultural Heritage. The Lanterna Magica or Magic Lantern was the most popular visual technology of the nineteenth century. This invention allowed transparent images on glass plates to be projected on the walls of theatres, schools and in a home environment. Travelling showmen with lanterns on their backs would also entertain audiences with lantern displays at carnivals.

The workshop brings curators, researchers, artists and collectors from all over Europe together to consider the manner in which the magic lantern can be reinstated as cultural heritage. The magic lantern played a crucial role in the development of our visual culture and the recent media history.

The workshop: The Magic Lantern Today: Creative Re-use of Cultural Heritage takes place between 27 - 29 October 2016 at M HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp) Leuvenstraat 32. The workshop will be organised by the Visual Poetics research centre (University of Antwerp) in collaboration with M HKA and Université libre de Bruxelles (Arts du spectacle) and fits in a large framework connected to A Million Pictures: Magic Lantern Slide Heritage as Artefacts in the Common European History of Learning.
