CENTRAL ASIA
Ensemble
As a museum with a special focus on Eurasia, M HKA engages with the plurality of culture across the total landmass we know as ‘Europe’ and ‘Asia’. For this reason, it also pays sustained attention to art from Central Asia. This ensemble provides an overview of events and artworks created by the artists from Central Asia and/or related to the culture and history of the region. The region of Central Asia (CA) consist of the following countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

In 2021 M HKA and the Tselinny Center of Contemporary Culture (Almaty, Kazakhstan) signed a memorandum on their cooperation concerning art from a wider regional Central Asian perspective and Kazakhstani position, with an international horizon and to their institutional cooperation. As part of this partnership, the Tselliny generously engages with our museum through annually acquiring works from the region, and donating them to M HKA. The selection of works aims to be a reflective moment, using the selection procedure organised by Tselinny committee. These works form part of the Şağylys collection, which in Kazakh means ‘reflection’.
