Exposition (Solo): Joseph Beuys – Salutations de l’Eurasien

L’exposition Joseph Beuys – Salutations d’Eurasie tentera de considérer à la fois les activités de Beuys à Anvers durant les années 60 et 70 et la pertinence de son œuvre pour une nouvelle génération.
Joseph Beuys a été actif à Anvers entre la fin des années 60 et le début des années 70 à travers ses liens avec la galerie Wide White Space pour laquelle il était une référence essentielle. Parmi ses nombreuses expositions, c’est là qu’il a effectué sa performance Eurasienstab [Bâton Eurasien] en collaboration avec Henning Christiansen, le 9 février 1968. Au-delà d’un artiste ayant été actif à Anvers (où il a rencontré d’autres figures de proue telles que Marcel Broodthaers), l’exposition Joseph Beuys – Eurasienstab abordera également Beuys en tant que personnalité ayant exercé une profonde influence sur la scène artistique belge en général, un aspect en grande partie oublié aujourd’hui.
L’exposition envisagera par ailleurs Beuys comme un artiste ayant eu une pratique à l’encontre de la logique et de l’hégémonie du modernisme. Dans un certain sens, il incarnait l’anti-modernisme. Prenant la performance Eurasienstab comme point de départ, l’exposition analysera dans quelle mesure l’usage de la notion « d’Eurasie » faisait partie du sentiment anti-moderniste de Beuys, qui détournait le regard des grands récits de « l’Occident » pour le diriger vers « l’Orient », dans une vision allant même jusqu’à supprimer de telles distinctions. Il avait manifestement plus d’affinités avec la profondeur culturelle, le mysticisme et la nature. Cela se répercutait dans son engagement politique qui reposait sur une croyance en la discursivité, la créativité, l’action directe et la liberté.
L’exposition comportera bon nombre d’œuvres majeures de Beuys, y compris des installations liées à ses actions et ses activités phares, dont Eurasienstab (1968), ainsi que Honigpumpe am Arbeitsplatz [Pompe à miel sur le lieu de travail] (1977) une œuvre qu’il a présentée à la Documenta 6 à Kassel en 1977 et qui illustre son idée de « sculpture sociale ». L’exposition mettra également en lumière les activités depuis longtemps oubliées de l’Antwerp Free International University [l’université libre internationale d’Anvers], cofondée par Beuys et des artistes locaux au début des années 80. Il s’agit de la première exposition importante d’œuvres de Beuys en Belgique depuis les années 80, lorsque l’artiste était encore en vie.
L’exposition est organisée par Nav Haq, commissaire d’exposition au M HKA.
L’exposition sera la première d’une série de présentations monographiques au M HKA de figures clés de l’avant-garde d’après-guerre ayant été actives à Anvers, inscrivant la ville dans un réseau de scènes artistiques de la dense région du Benelux et du bassin rhénan. Les expositions suivantes en 2018 et 2019 se focaliseront respectivement sur Marcel Broodthaers et James Lee Byars.
